The grounds Bungie relies on

Bungie's Destiny Account Restrictions and Banning Policies (checked on 26 October 2026) distinguish temporary restrictions from permanent bans, either of which may apply to the account or to the device. Bans follow, inter alia, connecting with modified software, hardware or firmware, external programs such as trainers, cheats or aimbots, automation that circumvents idle detection, win trading and paid account recoveries for boosting. On PC, Destiny 2 also runs BattlEye, and Bungie's support guide states that players can be removed from the game when BattlEye detects hacking or cheating.

The distinction matters for the appeal. Bungie states that restrictions may not be overturned or undone before they expire, whereas permanent bans result from escalating restrictions for the same behaviour or from extreme violations. It shall be noted that a ban for cheating may be applied to the entire fireteam of the player concerned, and that a device ban bars every account on that console or PC, including a device bought second-hand. Letting a family member or roommate play, by contrast, is listed in Bungie's policy as not recommended but not leading to a ban.

Where the appeal goes

Appeals go to Bungie through the Ban/Restriction Appeal contact form on Bungie's help site, filed for the Bungie account that received the ban or restriction. Bungie points out that answers come in English only, that not every submission receives a reply from an employee, and that requests for the reason or length of a ban are disregarded. Since multiple submissions or abuse of the form may, moreover, lead to further restrictions, one complete request is the safer course.

Two points deserve attention before filing. First, error code WEASEL appears when a ban or restriction is applied during play, but Bungie states that the same code covers other disconnections that are not followed by any ban. Second, a temporary restriction for poor connection quality calls for Bungie's network troubleshooting steps rather than an appeal, and a ban in the first Destiny game does not carry over to Destiny 2 unless one was applied there as well.

What the appeal should contain

Bungie's appeal page asks for evidence and for candour, so a player who violated the policy should explain exactly how, including any cheat software used. A player who abused a game bug should give detailed instructions to reproduce it, since Bungie states that it is more likely to overturn a ban once it can verify the bug. Images and videos are not attached but linked through imgur.com or youtube.com, as the form's instructions specify.

Beyond that, the appeal should state the Bungie Name, the platform, the date and the activity named in the message, and whether the ban concerns the account or the device. For a PC ban, a list of the programs that ran alongside the game helps, because Bungie names Discord, OBS, XSplit and RTSS as common applications that do not lead to bans, whereas external programs that modify or analyse the game or automate play may. Where another person used the account, the appeal should document the circumstances, given that Bungie holds players responsible for their account and hardware.

After the decision

Bungie gives no guarantee of a reply or of an overturn, and clear violations of its policy are, in its own words, less likely to be reversed. A second request makes sense only with new facts, for example a reproducible bug report that was not available before, whereas repeating the first request risks further restrictions under the form's rules.

Bungie treats players who have ever been banned or restricted in any Bungie game as high-risk players, for whom bans and restrictions apply at lower thresholds. Playing on through another account during a ban may breach Bungie's license agreement and Code of Conduct. Accordingly, this guide does not describe ways around a ban.

Current enforcement

The Destiny 2 appeal page sets out the steps in short form, and whether a wider enforcement wave is under way across games is recorded on the ban-wave monitor.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Destiny 2 ban be appealed?

Yes, through the Ban/Restriction Appeal contact form on Bungie's help site, filed for the banned Bungie account. Bungie does not guarantee a reply or an overturn, and clear violations of its policy are less likely to be reversed.

Does error code WEASEL mean a Destiny 2 ban?

Not necessarily. Bungie states that WEASEL appears when a ban or restriction is applied during play, but that the code also covers other disconnections that are not followed by a ban.

Is a Destiny 2 restriction permanent?

No. Bungie defines restrictions as temporary and states that they may not be lifted before they expire, whereas bans are permanent and follow repeated restrictions or extreme violations.
