The grounds Mojang relies on
Mojang Studios, as an Xbox Game Studio, affirms the Xbox Community Standards and holds Minecraft players to them, and its own Community Standards for Minecraft supplement them. Mojang's help article on banned accounts lists the violations that may lead to a temporary or permanent ban. They comprise hate speech, sexual content and soliciting improper contact, real-life threats, exposing other people's personal information, links to malicious software, impersonating staff, cheating and exploits that affect other players, and commercial spamming. Permanent bans, according to the same article, are reserved for the most severe or repeated violations.
On Java Edition, such a case can begin with a chat report. Since the 1.19.1 release in 2022, players can report chat messages to Mojang's moderators, every report is reviewed by an investigator, and Mojang has stated that swearing alone does not lead to a ban. The ban, moreover, attaches to the account and not to the name, since Mojang connects it to the unique ID of the Microsoft account rather than to the gamertag or profile name. Banned players cannot play on servers, join Realms, or host or join multiplayer games.
Where the appeal goes
For an account ban, the Minecraft Help article on banned accounts (checked on 26 October 2026) points to the Case Review form. The Community Standards for Minecraft set three conditions, as stated there: the enforcement action must be active, last longer than 24 hours and have been issued within the last 12 months. Only players who meet these criteria may submit a case review, while for an inappropriate name or skin Mojang refers players to its article on updating banned skins and usernames.
Server bans, however, follow the server's own process. Mojang states that each private server is self-moderated at the owner's discretion and that it does not intervene there except for overt violations of the EULA and its terms. On Hypixel, for example, bans and mutes are appealed only through the punishment appeal form on the Hypixel Forums, after the Minecraft account has been linked to a forum account. Thus, the first question is always who imposed the ban.
What the appeal should contain
A case review for a chat-report ban should identify the Microsoft account, the edition, the date of the enforcement message and the conduct it names, and then explain the reported message in its context. Mojang has stated that its investigators take into account that chat messages can mean different things depending on the situation, e.g. messages about combat in the game; the appeal, therefore, should reproduce the surrounding conversation and the situation in the game as precisely as possible.
For a ban based on cheating or exploits, the appeal should name the client, launcher and modifications in use and explain whether any of them could affect other players' gameplay, which Mojang's list expressly includes in cheating. On a server such as Hypixel, the appeal should cite the punishment reason shown at login and attach evidence through the image and video services the server accepts. Hypixel's support adds that players are responsible for actions taken on their accounts even if the account was compromised.
After the decision
Mojang's help article does not describe a second review, and it advises banned players with a Realms Plus subscription to cancel it so as not to be charged for content they cannot access. Hypixel allows one appeal per mute or ban, and its support cannot overturn a decision its appeals team has already made on the forums. A further request, therefore, makes sense only with new facts and, on Hypixel, not for the same punishment.
Using another account to return to a server or to multiplayer during a ban may itself breach Mojang's terms or the server's rules. Accordingly, this guide does not describe ways around a ban.
Current enforcement
The ban-wave monitor of Game Ban Appeal records whether a publisher is currently running a wider enforcement wave, and the Minecraft appeal page sets out the steps of an appeal in short form.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a time limit for a Minecraft ban appeal?
Yes. According to Mojang's Community Standards, a case review is available for an active enforcement action that lasts longer than 24 hours and was issued within the last 12 months.
Can Mojang lift a Hypixel ban?
No. Private servers are self-moderated, and Mojang does not intervene there except for overt violations of the EULA and its terms. Hypixel bans are appealed through the punishment appeal form on the Hypixel Forums, once per ban.
Is a Minecraft ban tied to the username?
No. Mojang connects bans to the unique ID of the Microsoft account, not to the gamertag or profile name, so a new name does not end an account ban. For a ban of an inappropriate name or skin, Mojang refers players to its article on updating banned skins and usernames.
